Meet our 2020 Christmas Raffle winner Anthony Wood from Bromley who’s dream came true when he became the owner of a racehorse on Christmas Day!
Tony, 32, was given the £10 ticket as a present by his mother, Jenny. Shortly after opening it, Racehorse Lotto CEO and Founder Hugh O’Donnell rang the lucky winner and gave them a Christmas surprise they will never forget.
“It was amazing telling them they’d won. They were so excited by the news and were both in tears.”
Tony has been a keen racing fan all his life and has been going racing since he was first taken by his grandparents as a small boy. He loves watching sprinters run, while Frankel and Sea The Stars are his two favourite thoroughbreds.
“It’s incredible, it’s made my year. I just can’t wait – the experience is going to be amazing!”
Tony is now the proud owner of his very own thoroughbred racehorse which will be trained in Newmarket by James Ferguson and ridden by top jockey Hayley Turner – and as the filly’s owner, he gets to keep 100% of any prize money (with the possible added excitement of a £20,000 Great British Bonus on top for winning a Maiden race).
Jenny said “This Christmas has been so difficult this year and it’s been his dream forever so I just wanted to get the ticket for him.” Sadly due to lockdown restrictions, Tony hasn’t yet had the chance to visit Newmarket and see his runner in the flesh – although he has been able to meet her and the team over a few video calls.
He and the family are currently enjoying choosing their colours (which he gets to keep for life) and also thinking hard about a name. “I was up all night just looking at your videos of her and thinking about a name. It’s really a life-changing experience!”
Keep an eye out for more blog posts over the course of 2021 as we keep you updated on the progress of Tony and his (soon-to-be-named) filly!
